Brackets and Such

March 22, 2006

Yea, I know.

Kansas, Kansas, Kansas. Boy, can I pick a sports team to follow. To get a feel for the agony I have felt watching my favorite teams, this is all you need to know: Atlanta Braves, Kansas Jayhawks, Georgia Bulldogs. I think my buddy Jarrett said it best in our Bracket Pick'em group: "Kansas is the Atlanta Braves of the NCAA". Indeed. So, for the umpteenth year in a row: There is always next year.

Otherwise, three of my four final four picks are still alive: Gonzaga, Villanova and Texas.

Is it me, or has the tournament been even better than it usually is. It seems every five minutes CBS is cutting away to another kid out of nowhere throwing in a three for the win with two defenders and a half the opponents band hanging off him, while Bill Raftery yells "ONIONS!". The Super Bowl seems to be the most anticipated sporting event these days, but the opening thursday of the tournament had more excitement than the last 5 super bowls combined.

On top of that, I have been a little deprived waiting for the next round of games this weekend. So I tuned into a NBA game last night. Bad move. I think Matthew Waxman said it best in his SI.com piece 64 Things we love about the tournament: "19) The thought of NBA players watching the games and remembering how much fun basketball used to be." Here, here.

Speaking of Bill Raftery, he is way underrated. He's Dick Vitale with discernment...and without an unhealthy infatuation with Duke. Another classic from Waxman's article: "3) Dickie V. announcing the Duke games... in his living room"

In other news, it appears we are not so good at baseball when other countries get involved.

Oh, and in case the Washington Nationals are listening, I will gladly move from 2nd base the left field. One caveat, though: You will probably need to stick another guy out there in left center (slo-pitch softball style). My range ain't what it used to be. But seriously, grow up Alfonso.

I was wondering where the bracket talk was. Glad to see you are surviving another Canadian winter. I drank the Jayhawk Juice after your boys woke up at the end of the season....and they killed me again. I was a little disappointed in Carolina, but when you consider SI and ESPN did not even pick them to make it into the tournament, you have to be happy, especially when Roy is going to be the coach of the year. I am watching the last two games now...sweating it out for Texas and Gonzaga. I was very disappointed to see Duke lose earlier. HA! I even had them moving on to the Elite 8 in my bracket and I was still happy to see them lose.

Well, hopefully it won't be 6 months before I see signs of life again. Send me an email if you get a chance.

Note for the Washington Nationals: Don't believe the hype....he never had any range. But if you put him at second the Bravos are one step closer to 15 in a row!!!

Call me Mister Opposite next year! This was the year that all 4 1 seeds were to make it! Well LA T ^%#^# DAH! They all B Gone! Next year I'm watching the Pre Pick Show and filling out my bracket to the opposite of their predictions! Except for the Jayhawks of course! Kevin....they will be back!
GO CARDINALS! and/or the Dominican Repubs!
