The Oprahtization of Televised Sports

July 14, 2004

Where are you Uecker? Will you help us Costas? After watching the Major League Baseball All-Star Game last night, we sure need you.

Let's get right to this. Here are some things Fox should consider:

1. Cancel American Idol. That way I don't have to sit through your "talents" as they slaughter any one of our nationally treasured songs.

2. Baseball players are not public speakers. Stop treating them like they are. If I have to hear one more "I gave it 100%, would like to thank my teammates and the people of (insert city name here)" speech, I am going to change the channel to TLC. I swear, I'll do it.

2a. I think we all could do without having microphones in everyone's back pocket in case we wanna chat during the game. It always turns into an awkward, "can he hear us, oh wait a minute someone just hit a home run" situation anyway.

3. Make a deal with NBC Sports that teams up Johnny Miller and Tim McCarver to call Women's Water Polo so we never have to hear from them again. Just to sweeten the deal, throw "Scooter" in...

4. I've got no beef with Joe Buck, he's a victim here.

5. I must have hallucinated, but was that a Yanni driven musical montage? It was hard to hear with all the people turning over in their graves....

6. Stop trying to force emotional moments on us. How produced was the whole Roger Clemens presentation midway through the game? Was I the only one thinking, "Hey, didn't this guy just get lit up for 6 runs in one inning?"

Have any of your own?

Oh, man...I just woke up. Did the American League win again?

Dad says:

I must honestly say that I tuned out in the 7th inning and went to sleep. Actually, I was already asleep, I just turned the set off made the room darker!
I also think Tim McCarver should be reassigned to the EXTREME (and I do mean EXTREME) X Games! Maybe someone there cares what he thinks?
Maybe they should just cancel the thing altogether and give the poor, hard working players a long weekend at Disney in the middle of the season. I know...that's a GOOFY idea!

Dad

Great suggestions....The main improvement would definitely be getting rid of McCarver. Of course, some people may think I am biased, since his Braves bashing has carried on for 13 years(and counting),we love ya' Deion. But, even the average fan has to tire of the constant babbling, and the repetitive comments, anyone who missed the enlightened discussion about the conversations the runner and the first basemen have, you should get a tape, after watching it you will hate Tim McCarver just as much as I do. Everytime the guy is on a broadcast, I proclaim my hatred for him, my wife never understood this, until last night after the monologue referred to above...she just kept saying "Why does he keep repeating the same thing over and over??"

Being a huge baseball fan, I traditionally partake in the viewing of the World Series every October, no matter who is playing, and this guy has been ruining that experience for many years.

Another thing....was it just me, or did Jeanie Velasko look like Miss Piggy???...the big hair and bright pink outfit??? I could have done without that as well.

Now you all know why I turn the sound off on the TV and listen to the radio!!! It is kind of like watching a "dubbed" movie but it's a whole lot more interesting!

Brad Daily says:

After watching some of the British Open, I have another name to add to that commentating team: Bobby Clampett (sp?). Of course for that to happen, Tiger Woods would have to play Women's Water Polo, seeing as 'ol Bobby can't seem to be without him...

cbass says:

I agree on all counts, especially that McCarver is a Bozo.He will forever be remembered as the only man who could make my sweet southern baptist mother like Deion Sanders. However, I enjoy Women's water polo, send him to a sport I don't watch, like American Idol.

Brad, we are presently seeking out a Mac sytem. We need to know if we can network a mac laptop and our dell pc. We also need to know how to use microsoft money since we switched to Firefox, at your request. Please help. Love the honeymoon pics. Bass
