Good Ol' Ronnie
December 23, 2003
Haven't had much to post lately, but I did run across this great quote from my favourite president since Lincoln. I have even been thinking lately that if one day I should have a child, and that child happens to be a boy, Abraham Ronald wouldn't be a bad name. Of course Nora might have something to say about that...
Anyway, here is a joke Reagan used to use to great effect back in the Cold War Days. It goes like this...
A Soviet citizen stands in line for three days to requisition a car. On the fourth day he reaches the counter. At last he concludes his transaction.
"Congratulations, comrade!" says the Soviet official. "Your automobile will be delivered to you on the fifth of March in the year 2005.""Morning or afternoon?" inquires the citizen.
The official is puzzled. "Why do you ask?"
The citizen explains: "The plumber is coming in the morning."
Priceless...

I think you left Kennedy off of your list of favorite presidents....

Valid points indeed. I think the circumstances of the times are the key variable in judging greatness. I'm sure everyone has their own list. I am really enjoying the website...although it is reducing my hours of sleep per night, but I did just enjoy watching Dave Matthews in Leno, something I would not have ordinarily seen....

Bass, let's stay on task here. I didn't see golf mentioned in any of the above text. And enjoy that victory while it lasts, only 5 more days until we celebrate Dr. King's birthday on the golf course. A little background B, Bass and I now have a traveling trophy, The Hampton Jug, that is up for grabs at each golf outing. We currently stand at one victory apeice. Maybe you could dedicate a square of the page to keeping tabs on the matches!

Both of you have great points. Speaking of great presidents, did Kevin tell you i beat him at golf.

I think you both better be glad I am not down there to take it from you...

Update on the trophy, it is residing in its rightful place in thhe Collins Cabin. Bass suffered an 82 to 93 defeat yesterday. I enjoyed the 11 stroke victory.

Well, not necessarily. He was a good president, although it would be interesting to see how history would have treated him had he not been assassinated. His handling of the Bay of Pigs, foreign policy in Vietnam, and somewhat shady road to election will stick with him for some time. Not to mention his some time Clintonesque dealings with the ladyfolk. However, he did seemingly save the world in the Cuban missle crisis, laid a foundation for civil rights, and kickstarted the US to win the race to the moon. Not bad for only three years.
The consensus today seems to be that the undisputed top three are Lincoln, FDR, and Washington, respectfully. Then there is a more muddy, arguable group that includes the likes of Teddy Roosevelt, Jefferson, Eisenhower, Reagan, and Polk. Kennedy usually finds himself in the third tier, with men like Adams, Madison, LBJ, and McKinley. Of course, it is all very relative to the time and events surrounding their presidency. Here is a link to a survey I found that somewhat resembled the listing above. WSJ Presidential Survey
